The ongoing events of the Arab Spring have proven to be far more complicated than first thought by many in the West. Multifaceted social and religious issues, including the transformation of Islamist movements into major political forces and rising Sunni and Shia tensions, have upended traditional politics. These challenges, combined with the need for sustainable economic growth, youth engagement and citizenship education, and a commitment to good governance by both secular and Islamist factions, have created continued tumult throughout the region.
In his new book, The Second Arab Awakening and the Battle for Pluralism, Dr Marwan Muasher presents today's events in the Arab region in the context of long-term historical pressure to build societies that will respond to Arab citizens' desire for freedom and opportunity. He asserts that through the painstaking process of constructing an Arab world defined by pluralism and tolerance, this dream can be realised. He explains the causes of the unrest, tracing them back to the first Arab Awakening, and warns of the forces today that threaten the success of the Second Arab Awakening.
