The Maxwell School’s Campbell Institute welcomed Robert Grenier — a 27-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency’s Clandestine Service and expert on the Middle East, South Asia, and counterterrorism — for its State of Democracy lecture "From Kandahar to Aleppo: Applying the Lessons of Afghanistan." Grenier is the author of “88 Days to Kandahar: A CIA Diary,” newly released in trade paperback. He was Chief of Station for Pakistan and Afghanistan during 9/11 and prepared the original war plan for U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. Grenier later organized and directed joint CIA/Special Forces teams that combined with Afghan militias to drive the Taliban and al-Qaeda from southern Afghanistan. Grenier also served as CIA's White House representative during the Iraq campaign, and later as Director of CIA's Counter Terrorism Center, responsible for all CIA counterterrorism operations around the globe. This lecture is made possible through a generous gift from the Norman M. and Marsha Lee Berkman fund.
