On Thursday, October 9th, 2014, Dr. Sanjay Basu delivered the 26th Annual Herbert Lourie Memorial Lecture on Health Policy entitled "Improving Public Health Safety Nets After an Economic Recession". Dr. Basu is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. The Herbert Lourie Memorial Lecture is jointly sponsored by Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the Central New York Community Foundation, Inc., and is administered by the Center for Policy Research. Herbert Lourie, MD, was a distinguished member of the national and international medical communities in the field of neurosurgery, as well as a physician who understood medicine as a high calling that demands the utmost of skill, intellect, compassion, and character. With his untimely death in 1987, our community lost a beloved healer, teacher, and leader. We convene every year for the Lourie Lecture in honor of this extraordinary man.
